Dennis Bovell
Dennis Bovell came to London from Barbados in 1965, aged 12. His father ran a sound called Tropical Soundmaster at blues parties, weddings and christenings, and Bovell went on to run his own sound, Jah Sufferer, from 1976 to 1980.
He led the band Matumbi, worked with Linton Kwesi Johnson, The Slits and The Pop Group, and produced Janet Kay's lovers rock hit "Silly Games". The 2024 compilation "Sufferer Sounds" collects dubs from his sound system years.
