London sound systems
London has been the centre of British sound system culture since Duke Vin set up in Ladbroke Grove in 1955. By the 1970s every part of the city had its own sounds: south London had Jah Shaka, Saxon Studio International, Sir Coxsone Outernational and King Tubby's; north London had Fatman Hi-Fi, Entebbe and Unity; west London had Great Tribulation and Mastermind; the East End had King Original and Jah Massagan.
The city's venues are part of the story too: the Four Aces in Dalston, Phebes in Hackney, the Cue Club in Paddington, the 31 Club in Harlesden and the Africa Centre in Covent Garden. Notting Hill Carnival is still the biggest sound system gathering in the world. See our Carnival guide.
