About the register
The UK Sound System Register is a free, independent list of British sound systems, past and present. It is run by a South London sound crew who rigged and ran systems across the capital in the 1990s. Read our story.
Where the names come from
The first batch of names came from the long-standing Reggaepedia list of sound systems (UK entries only), plus well-known pioneers and modern crews. Each name was researched using museum collections, the British Association of Sound Systems, interviews, obituaries and the crews' own websites. New entries are added as people send them in.
What each entry shows
- Still playing: the sound has played or released something recently.
- Legacy: the sound has stopped, or its founder has died, but its history is documented.
- Possible match: a lead that hasn't been confirmed yet.
- No public trace yet: a name from the lists with nothing published about it.
Contacts are only public channels the crews publish themselves, such as official websites, social pages and Bandcamp contact forms. We don't list personal phone numbers. Photo links go to where pictures are held, mostly museum collections and magazine features; the photos belong to their photographers.
