Yorkshire sound systems

Yorkshire has some of the most influential sound systems in the country. In Leeds, rival sounds Concrete Lion and Messiah were battling by 1977, and Mark Iration's Iration Steppas later built the foundation of West Yorkshire's underground bass scene, releasing "Scud Missile" in 1993. Cosmic Slop runs a hand-built audiophile system to raise money for a youth charity.

Huddersfield had one of the richest scenes outside London, documented in the 2014 book Sound System Culture: Celebrating Huddersfield's Sound Systems. Papa Burky's Earth Rocker (1975) was one of the biggest sounds in the north; Armagideon began as Youthman in 1978; and King Maestro won the North of England Cup Clash in 1989 and beat Jamaica's Killamanjaro in 1991. Paul Huxtable's Axis Valv-a-tron still plays on traditional valve amps, and Henry Lowe's Yagga Roots grew from a 50-watt guitar amp.

In Sheffield, Huw Williams' Sinai Sound System has grown from a three-box stack into one of the most powerful rigs in Europe, and newer builders like Seleucid Sound (2024) carry on the hand-made tradition.
