North West sound systems

Manchester's sound system culture grew up in Moss Side and Hulme, where Baron Turbo Charge formed in 1974. Freedom Masses Sound System has carried the roots tradition in the city since at least the early 1990s, and Nucleus Roots (1996) grew from a studio for local reggae talent into an act that has played Glastonbury and toured Europe.

In Lancashire, Operation Sound System from Preston and Blackburn has toured every year since 1996 and runs its own label, while Bushrocker Hi-Fi, founded by the late Colin "COJO" Joseph, is a fixture at Beat-Herder Festival. In Liverpool 8, Strugglers' Sound System played Granby Street through the 1970s and 80s.

Further north, Natural Selectas Sound System has run dub sessions in Ulverston since 2017, and North Fire Sound, on a rig designed by Mungo's Hi Fi's Breezak Bass, now curates the Dub and Grub nights near the Scottish border.
